Nyakatare, March 5, 2025 – St. Peter’s Cathedral in Nyakatare was alive with the spirit of faith and devotion as worshippers gathered for a moving Ash Wednesday service. This solemn yet hope-filled event marked the beginning of the sacred Lenten season—a time for repentance, renewal, and reflection. The service was led by the Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka, Bishop of the Diocese of Kinkiizi, and the Very Rev. Cam. James Kabagambe, Sub-Dean of the Cathedral.
The congregation was a beautiful tapestry of faith, with attendees including Diocesan Office Staff, pupils from Nyakatare Primary School and Mother Care Primary School, students from the Mother’s Union Vocational Training Center, and countless faithful from the Cathedral Hills community. The presence of school children and the community’s unity were a testament to the power of faith to bring people together.
In his heartfelt homily, Bishop Dan Zoreka illuminated the deeper meaning of Lent’s 40-day journey—a journey modeled on Jesus Christ’s 40 days of fasting in the wilderness. With Easter as the glorious destination on April 20, Lent provides Christians with a sacred opportunity to pause, reflect, and renew their spirits.
“This season is a call to deepen our faith through prayer, fasting, and self-examination,” the Bishop declared. “As we journey through these 40 days, let us seek God’s forgiveness, renew our commitment to Him, and strengthen our relationship with one another.”
Grounding his message in Scripture, Bishop Zoreka quoted Isaiah 58:6-12 and Matthew 4:1-2, urging all Christians across the Diocese of Kinkiizi to engage in acts of kindness and generosity. He passionately reminded the congregation of the importance of almsgiving—helping the less fortunate through donations, service, and compassion. His words were a rallying cry for believers to not just reflect on their faith, but to actively live it out.
The service was deeply meaningful, featuring the Holy Communion and the traditional imposition of ashes. As the ashes were placed on foreheads, the congregation—young and old—was reminded of the fragility of life and the infinite grace of God that sustains us. The children, teachers, and faithful stood together in reverent silence, united by their dependence on God’s mercy.
Lent has begun, and the faithful of St. Peter’s Cathedral are called to make this a season of prayer, fasting, and generosity. As they prepare their hearts for the joy of Easter, they are reminded that God’s love transforms lives and His grace renews even the weariest of souls.
Faith in action is a powerful thing. This Lent, let’s be inspired by the devotion of the St. Peter’s community and embrace the season with open hearts.
